The Garnet Cluster Ring -- My customer had received a garnet stone (approximately 5mm in size) from her mother, who had decided to take all the garnets out of her cluster and give one stone to each of her children and grandchildren. Some of the garnets were set into pendants, some into sterling settings and some into gold ring settings.
My customer had another idea. She told her mother she would like to have the mounting - since it was rather useless and could not be worn without any stones. Also it was very large design. Who would wear a cluster of that size - these days? So my customer approached me with an idea. She wanted a three stone ring made from the cluster - using the garnet for the center and then taking two diamonds from an engagement ring, for the side stones. We talked and made a few sketches and did some figuring - and I said "Sure", I can make in into a three stone ring from the cluster mounting.
After much very tedious cutting and designing, the three stone ring started appearing. I had to resize the side settings to accommodate the diamonds. I also took special care to use the frame of the cluster to fit it under the gallery of the setting. This would give my customer a comfortable fit to her finger while wearing the ring.
The end result was a beautiful three stone garnet and diamond ring -- and it was still was her mothers ring and the garnet from her mother. By making this three stone ring, it turned a garnet stone and a rather useless mounting into a ring with immeasurable sentimental value for my customer. Job completed - Customer satisfied!
